Salta City was founded in 1582 by Hernando de Lerma, under orders from the Virrey Toledo (Spanish crown). Today the city has grown considerably, but keeps intact the colonial spirit in many of its most important monuments and houses, making it the best city in Argentina which has preserved its architectural legacy.
San Bernardo Convent

Cachi is a beautiful village, located northwest of the Calchaquí Valleys, rested on the eastern side of the "Nevado de Cachi", a mole of 6720 meters. and bordered by the Calchaquí river, who was born not far from there, in the tops of the "Nevado de Acay", another mole of 5950 meters above sea level.
The famous Tin Tin Line
Its name derives from a confusion that took the natives, who mistook the snowy summit of the hill with a saline. This is not so unreasonable, considering that the region abounds in salt and its summit never before achieved, or were not reported until then.

This is a trip that combines two tours of longer duration. A trip to San Antonio de los Cobres, and a visit to the Quebrada de Humahuaca, knowing the village of Purmamarca and passing earlier by Salinas Grandes.
Close to the Salt Flats
The landscape that runs can hardly be forgotten, the Quebrada del Toro surprised by their shapes and colors.The Salt Flats or Salinas Grandes, located mostly in Jujuy territory, and have an area of approx. 212 sq km, are ideal for experimenting with the photo camera because of its large dimensions and perspective generated by the distance to the horizon. And Purmamarca also surprised by the colors of its geography and culture. THE TRIP It begins doing the same route as San Antonio de los Cobres, entering by the "Quebrada del Toro" and knowing the various attractions of the area. Arrival to San Antonio. Then begins the most inhospitable part of the journey. Passing through the Polvorilla Viaduct, is progressing on route 40, where there are almost no inhabitants, in the direction of the Salt Flats (Salinas Grandes). The magnificent view of the road shows impressive Tuzgle Volcano, with its 5.500msnm and the opportunity to photograph wild animals like the Vicuña. In Jujuy territory the Salt Flats surprised since they are divisible for the first time. It makes a stop here to enjoy so strange landscape like to take pictures. Then moving up the so-called Cuesta de Lipan, whose highest point is 4010 meters above sea level. It drops its endless curves to the village of Purmamarca, in the Quebrada de Humahuaca and famous for its Cerro de los 7 colores. Visit the town, and undertakes a return to Salta by the so-called Way of cornice, an alternate path that meanders by the so-called jungle pede Montana. - DISTANCE: 600 Km. aprox.

The Humahuaca Canyon is a region rich in history and traditions. This area has been used as road and settlement over ten thousand years, and today still retains architectural and archaeological sites that are testimony to its long history and a population that keeps ancient customs.
Beatifull Rainbow in Purmamarca
It forms a natural corridor toward North-South, which stretches across the Rio Grande basin and that communicates the Jujuy Valley with the Puna region. In 2003, during a meeting held in Paris, has been declared by UNESCO as a "World Heritage Site", in the category "Cultural Landscape". From north to south these are the towns who belong: HUMAHUACA: It is the headwaters of the region and is considered the historical capital of the "Humahuaca Canyon", and the heart of the carnival. Adobe houses, narrow streets and cobblestone, and tranquillity almost anytime, less in the carnival (February) There is a good variety of museums that show different expressions of the region. The Cathedral Church is a National Historical Monument and contains paints from Cuzco (Inca Capital in Peru). The Monument to Independence, or to the "Indio Calchaqui", represents the place where he fought in defense of the Nation. UQUIA: In his church rest the remains of the historian Pedro Lozano, and kept a collection of paintings cuzqueñas called "Los Angeles arcabuceros". Its hills preserved an invaluable paleontological treasure, to preserve remnants of the earliest mammals who emigrated from North america once joined the two continents. HUACALERA: Town protagonist of the epic of 1841 between unitarys and federals. His church was built in the eighteenth century, and is a gem of colonial architecture. It keeps cuzqueño paintings like "The Marriage of the Virgin" and "The Baptism of Our Lady", unique in its theme. The school, still standing, dating from 1825. The mill colonial work of the Jesuits, and the archaeological site of Pucara Molla are the most characteristic points. Very near the village is the monolith of the Tropic of Capricorn, which indicates the place where the imaginary line passes. Around the Monolith, December 21 at noon is casts a shadow angles. TILCARA: Town of significant importance which has museums, craft centers, restaurants, hotels and campsites. In summertime, a great feast called "January Tilcareño." Among its cultural attractions is the Pucara of Tilcara a building that Aboriginals Omaguaca built more than 900 years ago, on top of a mountain, from where they had vision of all the valley and access roads. Is currently rebuilt several pens and dwellings, and in the eastern side, is a necropolis with numerous funeral pyres. MAIMARA: In this small town, the highlight is the hill known as "The Painter's Palette" reference in their shape and color. The cemetery is very interesting, with its architecture of the early twentieth century.
Maimara
PURMAMARCA: Town reclining on the "Hill of the 7 colours ", famous for its unique combination of colors. Its urban layout was made around his main Church, that dates back to 1648. Paste the church can be seen an old carob (Algarrobo), which saw much of the history of the canyon. TUMBAYA: Former settlement of the Omaguacas. At present its appeal, besides its streets, are the cemeteries on the tops of the hills. At its territory is one of the largest lakes in the region, the Guayatayoc Lake. VOLCAN: His name does not refer to a volcano as he knows. "Volcano" is called in the region to large flows of mud falling from the hills in the rainy season and they tend to destroy everything that are in its path. It has a special charm for his old railway buildings, abandoned today. Other natural beauties are "Laguna de Gronda" and the Santuyo Waterfall of 20 meters high and located east of town. THE TRIP: Based on route No. 9 to join the route No. 34 and back again to route No. 9. Visit Purmamarca to observe "The Hill of Seven Colors", the Church and the craft market. Arrive to San Salvador de Jujuy, visiting the Hall of flags, the Cathedral, where the pulpit carved in wood and laminated in gold. Back on the path of cornice, exquisite subtropical vegetation; Crossing the "Abra Santa Laura", watching the dikes La Cienaga, Las Maderas and Campo Alegre. Finally passing through the historic village of La Caldera and Vaqueros before arriving Salta.

The Cafayate area is famous for its vineyards, for their excellent wines (the best grape is the Torrontés type) and its wineries. It is one of the most important cities inside of the tour to the calchaqui Valley.
Bus Stop in the road to Cafayate
The tour starts going to the south of the Lerma´s Valley, knowing for the cultivation of tabacco and towns of colonial architecture, linked to the Independence of Argentina. After entering the Canyon "De las Conchas" (or Cafayate), knowing amazing and capricious images eroded by wind and water, as the Devil's Throat and the Amphitheatre, among others. Once in Cafayate the tour visit its monuments, buildings, and can not miss a visit to some of its famous wineries, where you can learn all about the famous wine that is produced in the region.
